Serve up some beetroot for a great nutritional boost

If you are looking for a vegetable that offers a great nutritional boost, then look no further than beetroot.

That is according to nutritional therapist and graduate of CNM, Wendy Moxley, who says the little red root is packed full of nutrients.

“Beetroot is full of nitrates, which are converted in the body to nitric oxide, and which widen arteries,” explained Ms Moxley.

“This increases blood flow, lowering blood pressure, reducing risk of dementia and increasing endurance and performance due.

“Beetroot also contains betaine, which helps the liver eliminate toxins. It helps with depression as it is a neural transporter, increasing the brain’s ability to maintain sufficient levels of serotonin and dopamine.

“Betacyanin, the pigment that gives beetroot its colour is a powerful antioxidant, preventing oxidation of LDL cholesterol and protecting artery walls, reducing risk of heart disease.

“It increases detoxification in the liver and is thought to prevent some cancers.

“Beetroot also continues folic acid, which is essential for normal tissue growth. It helps prevent neural tube defects causing spina bifida in the first trimester of pregnancy. It is also a methyl donor.

“Silica helps the body utilise calcium, increasing musculo-skeletal strength and lowering osteoporosis risk, while other nutrients in beetroot include iron for anaemia and fatigue, immune-boosting vitamin C, fibre to eliminate waste, and essential minerals like potassium (for nerve and muscle function ) and manganese (for bones, liver, kidneys, and pancreas ).

“It also contains boron, related to sex hormone production. So, with boron and nitric oxide combined, beetroot is quite the aphrodisiac - just in time for Valentine’s Day,” added Ms Moxley.
