Mayo Operation Transformation walks set for Ballina, Castlebar, Claremorris, Westport, and Erris

Is getting more physically active part of your new year resolutions? Don’t know where to start and need some support? The new series of RTE’s Operation Transformation is once again joining forces locally with Mayo Sports Partnership to encourage people to become more physically active in 2015.  

A number of walks will take place across the country this Saturday, January 17 with walks taking place in Ballina, Belmullet, Castlebar, Claremorris and Westport.

The walks, either 3km or 5km in length and they will be led by suitable instructors who will be on hand guide participants through the walk and also to give advice about follow on programmes etc.

“Operation Transformation 2014 was a great success providing people with great motivation to get more physically active. After the Christmas people are thinking of doing some exercise for whatever goal they may have and don’t know where to start. Through the Operation Transformation Mayo campaign we hope to be able to provide support for people to become involved.” Mayo Sports Partnership Co-ordinator Charlie Lambert commented.    

Event co-ordinators Mayo Sports Partnership and local organisers such as Ballina Athletic Club, Erris Community Health Forum and Westport Leisure Park are encouraging people of all age groups to turn out on the day. This years campaign is also supported by Mayo County Council in conjunction with Mayo Rural Alliances.

In all the events there is no cost involved and some light refreshments etc. will be available afterwards. Participants are asked to wear loose clothing and to bring some water. Further information on Operation Transformation can be viewed at : www.rte.ie/ot/ Details of Mayo Sports Partnerships follow on five week initiative Operation Get Active Mayo involving approximately 25 communities / groups throughout Mayo will be promoted at www.mayosports.ie and also in local media. Other programmes such as Men on the Move, Couch to 5K, Meet and Train, Fit Walk, Parkrun etc. will also form part of this county wide call.

Ballina: Ballina Town Soccer Club, Belleek meet at 9.30am with walk starting at 10am.

Castlebar: Castlebar Tennis Club, meet at 9.30am with walk starting at 10am.

Claremorris: Clare Lake, meet at 11.30am with walk starting at 12pm.

Erris: Civic Centre, Belmullet, meet at 9.30am with walk stating at 10am.

Westport: Westport Leisure Park, meet at 9.30am with walk starting at 10am.
