Christmas fitness boost at Land of the Giants in Claremorris

The third annual Land of The Giants Christmas Duathlon in Claremorris takes place on December 27.

Organisers of the event say has grown hugely in popularity over the last three years with participants using it as a means to burn up some of the calories that get devoured over the Christmas period while meeting old friends and new and having some fun.

The run-bike-run event will start and finish at the Square, Claremorris.

This event is open to people of all abilities and finish times are not too important for many. However, some of the leading athletes from the locality also use the duatholon as a means to bench mark themselves and get ready for the coming season.

Last year, young Westport international triathlete Aichlinn O Reilly showed a clean pair of heels to a high class senior field and Spiddal’s Marie Boyle set a blistering pace to take the ladies’ title.

Both will be looking to do the same again in 2014.

Registration for the duathlon is in the Square from 8.30am with a start time of 11am.

This year, there is also a relay option in which the runner undertakes the two runs and the cyclist takes on the 18 kilometre bike leg.

There is somthing for everyone to be cheerful about with a whole host of spot prizes, fancy dress, and team prizes.

The town is decorated with lights and trees and when the participants get togged out in their respective club colours, it makes for a real colour fest over the holiday season.

First time duathlon participants are very welcome.

Sponsors of the event are Future Insurance Brokers, the McWilliam Park Hotel, Flynn’s Pharmacy, Waldron & Associates Architects, and Dixon & Dever project development services.

The event is being supported by Claremorris Chamber of Commerce, the McMahon Park Committee, Mayo County Council, and the Road Safety Authority.
