Superfast broadband speeds for three Mayo towns

Eircom has announced plans to significantly increase broadband speeds on its network in Ballina, Castlebar and Westport.

When complete, the superfast one gigabit broadband rollout, will allow Eircom customers in the three towns to download a high definition film in less than a minute.

Business users will have the bandwidth capacity to transfer applications and large data files at rates previously only available to large enterprises.

The faster speeds are being made available in 66 communities across the country.

Detailed rollout plans have not yet been announced but the project is scheduled to be completed by December 2017.

Commenting on the announcement, Richard Moat, acting CEO of Eircom, said the company is ‘future proofing’ its network.

“This announcement underlines Eircom’s ambition for Ireland and our ambition as the country’s leading telecommunication provider to rollout new technologies that enable and encourage economic growth,” he said. “

The project will run alongside Eircom’s existing fibre investment programme, which plans to deliver faster broadband speeds to 1.6 million premises across Ireland by mid-2016.
