Fifty-two live gigs for major Celebration of Music in Castlebar

Castlebar is set to come alive with the sound of music when 52 acts perform in 24 venues across the town, for the inaugural Celebration of Music festival, over this October Bank Holiday weekend.

A group of the town’s publicans, restaurant owners and retailers have gotten together, supported by Castlebar Chamber’s tourism and events coordinator, Mick Baynes, to rock the town with live music.

The festival, which officially launched on Thursday, continues all weekend.

The Celebration of Music will “showcase what Castlebar has to offer both the local and the visitor” in terms of its convivial nightlife, said Mr Baynes.

“There will be street buskers (weather permitting ), shop performances, impromptu sessions, music while you dine, and even a chance to become a star yourself with karaoke. Ninety per cent of the performances are free,” he continued.

Over the weekend, there will be plenty of events throughout the county town for all of the family to enjoy, as the Celebration of Music also coincides with the annual RoolaBoola Childrens Arts Festival.

RoolaBoola, organised by the Linenhall Arts Centre, sees a packed and varied programme of activities for children aged two to 12, including international theatre, film, workshops, music and art.

“People staying at Breaffy House will also be able join in the fun, as a special shuttle bus will be put on,” added Mr Baynes.
