Cancer Care West golf classic
A golf classic in aid of Cancer Care West in Balla Golf Club will take place tomorrow, Saturday August 16. This will be the final fundraiser in memory of Brigid Cogger (RIP ) from Straide, prior to the presentation of the money raised from other fundraising efforts. Parke Arts and Drama group gears up for new season
In conjunction with the recently refurbished Parke Community Hall, Parke Arts and Drama Group is entering a new era of productions for the 2014/2015 season within the venue. With this in mind Parke Arts and Drama Group invites anyone new to the group as well as existing members to an introduction to its two forthcoming productions at Turlough Community Centre on Tuesday August 19 at 8pm. Information on the productions including audition dates, etc, will be given, all interested in participating including back stage support are most welcome.
Family fun day at Clogher Heritage Cottage
A family fun day in the bog will be held at Clogher Heritage Cottage and Forge, Clogher, Claremorris, on Saturday August 23 from 11am to 2pm. It will be hosting a turf cutting demonstration using the traditional Slane on the Clogher Bog Loop Walk as well as bringing home the turf by donkey and cart. At Clogher Forge there will be a blacksmithing demonstration by a local blacksmith as well as a display of vintage machinery. People Before Profit meetings
The People Before Profit group representing the Claremorris Municipal District, will hold its monthly meetings on a new day and at a new venue. The meetings are now on the third Monday of the month at 7.30pm at Maxwell’s Lounge at The Square in Claremorris. The next meeting is this coming Monday August 18. The meeting will be discussing water charges and household tax, and what the people of the district can do to have their voices heard by the Government and the Mayo County Council. At the September meeting the group will look into the EirGrid issue as well as the wind farms, All are welcome to attend and air their views.
Furry 5k at Petworld
Petworld Turlough is hosting the Furry 5K, an annual dog walk for animal welfare charities. The walk will take place in six locations around the country and benefit seven charities, one based here in Mayo; MSPCA. The walk will leave from the store on Sunday August 17 at 10am sharp and promises to be a fun morning full of laughter and atmosphere as animal lovers (and their dogs! ) get together for a great cause. Afterwards there will be light refreshments, for both the two and four-legged, back at Petworld. The walkers will get a chance to meet representatives from the charities to see how the money they have earned will be spent. There will also be free goody bags provided by Hill’s Science Plan Pet Foods, which will include money off vouchers for Hill’s Science Plan dog food. Heinrich Boll Association present Louis Stewart and Jim Doherty

East Mayo Ramblers
The East Mayo Ramblers will meet at Aghamore church on Saturday August 23 at 10am.
An excellent guide will give the history of this area as you walk along the bóithríns and by-roads that lead to this sacred place. The Ramblers would like as many people as possible to join them on this occasion as it is an ideal location for the launch of Heritage Week. The walk will take around two and half hours and a cover charge of €5 will be applied. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
The Ramblers will follow this up with a historical walk to Island Castle, where they will visit the Ogham Stone on Tuesday August 26, meeting at Old School House, Larganboy, at 6pm. On Thursday August 28 they will hold a historical walk in Beakan, meeting at the Beakan Community Centre at 6pm. Both the Tuesday and Thursday walks will also have a €5 cover charge.
Drumming workshops set to rock Knock
Knock Counselling Centre will host a series of drumming workshops as part of its “Supporting Family Life” initiative. The workshops will take place on Tuesday nights, from 7pm to 8pm, from September 16 until October 14. Fiona McCarthy, director of Knock Counselling Centre, said: “We aim to create an environment where parents and their children can spend some time together, connect and communicate, while exploring their individual creative rhythms.” Sessions cost €5 per person per session. Charity tea dance
Della's Charity Tea Dance will take place in The Ard Ri Hotel in Tuam, Sunday August 17, music by PJ Murphy and Michael Sexton. This is a fundraising for Tocher Valley Rural Community Network, dancing will take place from 3pm to 6pm, and admission is €7. All are welcome.
Boheh Stone Walk
The Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail is hosting a walk and talk to the Boheh Stone on Sunday August 24. Go and immerse yourself in Mayo’s pre-historic culture, and view the Boheh Stone, a unique Neolithic feature.
This is a guided walk, join local archaeologists to hear about this site and (weather permitting ) experience the amazing “Rolling Sun” phenomenon for yourself, where the sun appears to roll down the side of Croagh Patrick at dusk. This is a moderate walk of two kilometres and is open to everyone, meeting and registration at Brackloon Community Centre at 7.30pm situated four miles out the Westport/Leenane road. Brackloon is on the N59 Leenane road, south of Westport. Pass through Knappagh and approx 7km/5miles, just past the Liscarney crossroads, the community centre is on the left. Refreshments will be served at the community centre with a brief talk before setting off the Boheh Stone. A cover charge of €5 will be applied. Ballycroy National Park guided walks
Due to popular demand the Ballycroy National Park Visitors Centre will be putting on two guided walks of the Daithi Ban Trail each Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday until the end of August. The guided walks will start at 12 noon and 2.30pm.
Bookkeeping course in Belmullet
Mayo North East plans on delivering a manual and computerised bookkeeping course (Big Red Book package ) in Belmullet. It will run for four Fridays on September 12, 19, 26, and October 10. This course is free of charge to job seekers and is funded by Mayo North East through the Local and Community Development Programme which is financed by the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government. Cookery demonstrations on Clare Island
Clare Island has a real treat in store for foodies. As part of its Seafood Festival, which runs from Friday August 22 to Sunday August 24, Tamasin Day Lewis (sister of Daniel Day Lewis ) will run three cookery sessions on the island. The Friday course will cover barbecuing, the Saturday morning session will cover savoury and sweet tarts, with the afternoon session covering puddings and desserts. Anger management counselling
Knock Counselling Service, in conjunction with the Irish Association for Anger Management, is running a two-day intensive anger management programme on Saturday and Sunday September 6 and 7. The course, which is called Temper Your Anger, will teach participants how to control their anger and stress levels, using cutting-edge techniques, combined with an experiential approach. Participants learn strategies to enable them to successfully deal with anger when it arises. Knock Counselling Service is hosting this popular programme in response to findings that GPs have very few options for helping patients who come to them with problem anger.
