A starry line-up of international musicians has been confirmed for the second Westport Festival of Chamber Music.

The festival of intimate musical performances in some of Westport’s most stunning settings was a significant success on its inaugural outing last year.

The festival has now been confirmed again for Friday to Sunday, September 5 to 7.

Westport House and Holy Trinity Church will host this year’s concerts.

Chamber music is a type of classical music often described as the ‘music of friends’ because it was typically performed by a small group of musicians in a palace chamber or home.

Artistic directors, violinist Catherine Leonard and pianist Hugh Tinney, will be joined this September by American violist Jennifer Stumm, Israeli clarinettist Chen Halevi, English oboist Nicholas Daniel, and cellist Guy Johnston as well as Irish pianist Finghin Collins.

Concerts will feature all of the musicians performing works by the great masters of European music from the 18th to the 20th century.

Catherine Leonard and Hugh Tinney are widely regarded as Ireland’s premier violin and piano duo.

The Irish Times described their recent National Concert Hall Beethoven series as perfectly poised and balanced - “nothing understated, nothing forced, everything spot on”.

Their guest performers are all highly successful on the international stage as soloists as well as regular performers at chamber music festivals around the world.

Neil Mooney, festival chair, said they are looking forward to welcoming back last year’s audiences as well as new visitors.

“We guarantee a wonderful weekend of music performed by these world-class musicians,” he added.
