Westport House Greenway to link Quay to Great Western Greenway

The Quay in Westport could soon see itself linked up with the Great Western Greenway if the plans for a greenway through the grounds of Westport House to the Golf Course Road come to fruition.

Mayo County Council engineer Patrick Corcoran, who is part of the team that has been leading the Westport Smarter Travel programme over the last number of years, gave the members of the West Mayo Municipal District a presentation on the programme at the July meeting of the district this week.

Mr Corcoran outlined the plans for the link up between the Westport Urban Greenway which travels through the town to the Quay and the popular tourist attraction. The works will be carried out subject to Part 8 planning permission and with the assistance of the Browne family, the owners of Westport House. Director of services for Mayo County Council, Martin Keating, said that this project would be a vital link between the Quay and the Great Western Greenway and would be a big boost to Westport House too.

Mr Corcoran also told the elected members that there would be €1.5 million spent on smarter travel projects in the town this year, with work being carried out to link the cycling and walking route at the Crescent to the leisure centre in the town, along with improving the current cycle and walking routes on the Castlebar road near Allergan.

Independent councillor Christy Hyland enquired if some of the funding that the project has been awarded could be used to put in CCTV around the area of the cycle paths, as he was concerned about the damage to public property located nearby, he was informed that the plan of works under the smarter travel programme was agreed between the council and the relevant government department which had to clear all the proposed projects.
