Westport made to work, while Kilmore win Tonra Cup

Soccer: Mayo League Round Up

Westport United kept up their 100 per cent record in the Elverys Sports Super League on Sunday, but they were made to work hard to maintain their winning run by Charlestown Athletic. Two late second half goals was what separated the teams at the full time whistle with David Cameron and David Hoban hit the target late on.

For the second weekend in a row Castlebar Celtic hit their opponents for seven, this time around it was Straide and Foxford United who felt the force of the Celtic attack with S&F old boy, Paul Fitzpatrick scoring a hat-trick. It was a day for trebles in Celtic Park as Ollie Cunningham also managed to find the back of the net on three occasions, with Gerry Hunt bagging the odd goal for Stevie Gavin's side.

Manulla picked up their fourth win in the league with a 2-1 win over Fahy Rovers in Carramore on Saturday evening, Keith Burke and Ben Freyne put Manulla 2-0, up before Fahy Rovers pulled on back before the end. Ballyheane had a 4-3 win over Moy Villa in Quigley Park on Saturday night, while Ballina Town saw off Iorras Aointaithe 4-2 on Sunday to keep their noses in second place in the table.

Westport United are still well out in front with 33 points and eleven wins from eleven to their name, while Castlebar Celtic have have moved themselves into poll position to take second place and are just one point behind second placed Ballina Town with two games in hand on the defending champions.

In the Tonra Cup Final played in Milebush on Sunday evening, Kilmore were the winners on penalties against Manulla B. The defeated side went into the lead when Des Gibbons scored seven minutes into the second half of extra time from the penalty spot, but the north Mayo side leveled up before the end through Ciaran Geraghty. In the shoot-out both sides missed one penalty each in the mandatory five spot kicks and Gary Henaghan missed for Manulla in sudden death leaving Ger McDonnell to score the winning spot kick for Kilmore.
