Young poets impress in national competition

Four young students from the county have won recognition from the National Museum of Country Life and Poetry Ireland for their poetic musings inspired by objects from Ireland’s past.

Primary and post primary students across Ireland were invited to submit poems based on items from the exhibition at the Turlough museum called History of Ireland in 100 Objects.

Far From Home by Ciara Hurst and Emigrant’s Suitcase by Billy O’Connor, both pupils at Corclough NS, won commendations for their work.

Empty Cooking Pot by Jenny Cox, a fifth year student at St Louis Community School, Kiltimagh, won second prize in the post primary category, while James Connolly’s Shirt by Kelly Hannick, a first year student at Gortnor Abbey, won a commendation in the same category.

The competition, supported by Poetry Ireland, attracted more than 200 entries from all over the country.
