Young No Namers on a national stage

Three young people from Mayo are hoping to win national honours for their volunteer work with their local No Name Club.

Shauna Sammon, Westport, Laura Beston, Claremorris, and Luke Worth, Belmullet, are vying for the prestigous title of the No Name Club host or hostess of the year at the awards ceremony in Kilkenny tomorrow night, which will be attended by more than 1,000 of their peers.

No Name Club is a nationwide network of youth clubs run by young people, for young people, to provide an alternative place for teens to socialise in alcohol and drug-free environments.

Just 20 young people have been shortlisted nationally for the Host and Hostess of the Year titles.

Laura Beston is a fifth-year student at Mount St Michael Secondary School. She is heavily involved in organising events with Claremorris No Name Club, volunteers with her local Special Olympics branch, and has raised €8,000 for charity by taking part in treks in Europe.

Luke Worth is a fifth-year student at Belmullet Secondary School, whose involvement with the Erris No Name Club has earned him a place in the award finals. He is a keen rugby player and singer, and is also taking part in the No Name Club Supertalent competition in April.

Shauna Sammon is a transition year student in the Sacred Heart School, Westport. She is very active in the Westport No Name Club and helped to recruit new members to the club throughout 2013. She also helped organise the club’s Christmas ball.
