Carty remembered by former council colleagues

The late John Carty was remembered by his former colleagues on Mayo County Council this week, who met for the first time since the death of the former TD, senator, and county councillor. As a mark of respect the council adjourned its meeting following the completion of the statutory business.

Fianna Fáil councillor Al McDonnell led the tributes to Mr Carty saying that he was a fine public representative and great person. He said he was “a man of not so many words, but of many actions”. McDonnell went on to praise the late Carty for his work for his local area and in particular for what he did for Knock Airport.

Fine Gael councillor John Cribben said, “He was a man who was loved in Knock and he loved Knock. His ability to work with people on the little things behind the scenes was a great ability, his work with the farming community and on Knock Airport will be remembered.” Cribben went on to say, “We may have been on different sides, but we were great friends behind it all and he was also a relative of mine.”

Sinn Féin Cllr Gerry Murray recollected that both he and Carty were elected to the council on the same day back in 1999 and he praised the work and funding that Carty delivered to east Mayo over his years in the Oireachtas, commenting, “I don’t think there was a GAA club in east Mayo that didn’t get a bit of funding from him.” County manager Peter Hynes said, “He was gentleman who will be missed. He had the unique honour of serving in three houses, here [the county council], in the Dáil, and then in the Seanad.”
