Three pedestrians died on Mayo roads in 2013

The traffic superintendent for the Western region, Supt Pat Murray, is appealing to pedestrians to light-up on the county's roads.

He said three pedestrians lost their lives in Mayo in 2013. He said 33 per cent of people who died on the region's roads last year were pedestrians.

He explained it is essential that pedestrians increase their visibility as much as possible.

“Always wear a high visibility jacket and fluorescent clothing and, if using unlit roads, carry a torch,” he advised.

“Finally, it goes without saying that if you under the influence of alcohol to any great extent, you should not walk home and particularly not on unlit country roads,” added the superintendent.
