Council warning for low-lying coastal householders

Mayo County Council has warned householders in low-lying coastal areas to prepare for further high tides tonight.

The authority's staff have been responding at a local level to the problems caused by the severe weather over the past 24 hours.

"Strong winds, heavy rain-falls and high tides have caused flooding in coastal areas including Ballina, Belmullet and Westport," reads a statement issued by Mayo County Council today (Friday ).

It continues: "The council’s fire brigade staff and road workers have worked throughout the night to deal with these problems.

"People are advised to avoid unnecessary journeys in order to avoid risks from falling objects.

"Owners of vacant property should check their premises for damage and to ensure that they are secure in advance of tonights expected high tide.

"All householders in low-lying coastal areas should prepare for tonight's high tide.

"Sand bags will be provided locally."

Mayo County Council said it will issue further information as it becomes available.
