Swinford famine grave

A Great Famine grave in Swinford, where 564 victims are buried, has been restored and commemorated.

The famine grave, visited by Michael Davitt in 1879 and later by Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, Arun, in 1994, had become overgrown and unkempt.

The site, behind the District Hospital in Swinford, has now been cleaned and restored with the help of the HSE and Martin Greaney, and a plaque erected in memory of the famine victims.
