Claremorris Christmas Duathlon

The Land of The Giants Christmas Duathlon will help sport enthusiasts burn up the treats that get devoured over Christmas, with a run, bike, and run event held on Saturday December 28 in Claremorris. Even though the event is an excuse to get out and about and do something sporting over the festive season, there are always the more serious competitors who will be out to test their fitness and hope none of their form has been lost due to overindulgence.

Some of the country’s leading athletes are set to take part in Claremorris, race organisers have already signed up some of the biggest names in this sport and it is a great chance for locals to pick the brains of these super athletes in a social environment.

Expected on the start line at the Square at 10.30am will be last year’s winner Ruaidhri Geraghty of Galway Triathlon; this year Ruaidhri will be pushed hard by Sea 2 Summit winning duo Brendan Conway of Westport and Kilconly’s Michael Flanagan, who both won the short and local distance events in Westport some six weeks ago. John Greaney of Galway is a man who thrives against the top opposition and will definitely be in the running as he is a demon over this distance. This year there is also a relay option, the runner does the two runs and the cyclist only has to complete the 18k bike route.

With a whole host of prizes there is something for everyone to be cheerful for.

With the town decorated with lights and trees and with the athletes togged out in their club colours the event will be a colour fest for the town over the festive season, if you have never done a duathlon before don’t worry as you won’t be the only one, for many the aim is just to complete the course while having a laugh. The event is being supported by Claremorris chamber of commerce, McMahon park committee, Mayo County Council, and the Road Safety Authority
