Ballinrobe Community School to perform Guys and Dolls

Transition year students from Ballinrobe Community School will put on a performance of the comical dual love story Guys and Dolls this week.

Guys and Dolls revolves around Nathan Detroit, the organiser of the oldest established permanent floating dice game in New York, who bets fellow gambler Sky Masterson that he can make the next girl he sees fall in love with him. The next girl he sees is Miss Sarah Brown, a Salvation Army reformer, and so the stage is set for an entertaining evening of hilarious complications.

Set in the world of New York’s small-time gamblers and gangsters, this highly amusing and entertaining production sees characters such as Nathan Detroit (Kevin Byrne ), Sky Masterson (Michael McDonnell ), Nicely-Nicely Johnson (Fionn Curran ), and Harry The Horse (Dara O’Connor ) totally absorbed by their dice game. Lieutenant Brannigan (Pearse Jennings ) of the New York Police spends most of his time trying to catch them out.

When Sky Masterson bets Nathan Detroit a thousand dollars that he will take any ‘doll’ named by Nathan to Havana on a date, he names Salvation Army member, Sarah Brown (Nicola O’Haire ). However, Nathan happens to be engaged to showgirl Miss Adelaide (Alison Madden ) for the past 14 years and she is pressuring him to get married.

And so begins a sequence of events where the talented and energetic cast will succeed in engaging the attention of the entire audience throughout the show, creating an atmosphere mixed with suspense and comedy.

Other stars of the show include: Arvide Abernathy (Heather Culkeen ), Benny Southstreet (Ezra McAleenan ), General Matilda A Cartwright (Eimear Gorman ), and Big Julie (Joseph Bradley ).

Directed by Fionnuala Dooley with musical director Ashling Murphy, this musical will be performed by students in Ballinrobe Community School on Friday December 13 at 8pm, and on Saturday December 14 at 8.30pm. For further information and booking contact Ballinrobe Community School at 094 9541777.
