Four months for stealing whiskey

A 21-year-old Romanian woman who stole ten bottles of whiskey from a Castlebar store was sentenced to prison at Castlebar District Court this week by Judge Aeneas McCarthy.

Anna Babusoru, 69 John Coogan Park, Newcastle, Galway pleaded guilty to stealing the drink worth €300 from Tesco on August 23.

Rory O’Connor, solicitor for the defendant, said that the woman has been in Ireland for over a year but is unable to get a job and is not entitled to social welfare and out of an “absolute necessity” stole the drink so that she could sell it on.

Babusoru, who has one child and lives with her unemployed partner, has previous convictions from district courts in Galway, Ennis and Roscommon.

Judge McCarthy sentenced her to four months in prison. Recognisances were fixed.
