Fuel poverty must be tackled—Ruane

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane, has welcomed the move by Electric Ireland to freeze its prices until January 2014 but warns that more needs to be done to tackle fuel poverty. She is calling on Labour to deliver on their party's promise to tackle fuel poverty and to use Budget 2014 to give some hope to families to make ends meet.

Councillor Ruane said: “The real life experiences of families who are struggling to pay their fuel and electricity bills are heart-breaking. Here in Mayo, I have spoken to vulnerable people who have spent months without electricity as they just can’t afford to pay their bills. As the winter approaches, more families will be forced to make the choice of feeding their families or paying their energy bills.”
