Byrne bursts to victory again

John Byrne of Mayo AC underlined his winning form with another brilliant victory in the Athlone Flatline Half Marathon on Saturday. Byrne led 939 finishers home in 71:39, 14 seconds quicker than his national half marathon time last month, and over a minute clear of the field led by Peter Mooney of the Marathon Club of Ireland.

Colette Tuohy was leading Mayo AC woman, fifth overall in 86:43 and ahead of a great run from that Sligo AC warrior Lucy Brennan. The results of the race and full list of 25 Mayo AC finishers can be seen at www.mayogaa.com There was a good turnout for the annual 8km at Irishtown on Saturday evening held as a fundraising event for CROI in memory of Padraig Cullina.

John Nolan from Brickens who has been a regular on the racing scene this year recorded his first win. He led 113 runners/walkers home to win in 32:03. Margaret Glavey has been in great form recently and the W60 champion was first woman across the line in 36.35.

Henry Hughes returned to his home town to win the inaugural Park Run 5km on Saturday morning in Westport in a time of 17:23.

Lots of races coming up soon

The Kenya 5km run/walk takes place at Claremorris tomorrow September 21 at 11am (note change from Sunday due to All Ireland Football final ). The AAI measured permitted course was used for 5km summer series 2013 finishing with lap of Claremorris AC track. It is organised with the assistance of Mayo AC. Entries €10 at Claremorris track from 10am on Sunday, open to all: Run, jog, walk. The sixth Annual Run West Ballyhaunis 8km race takes place this Saturday September 28 at 4pm. Entry at runireland.com or on the day at Rugby Club race HQ. This is the fifth race in the 2013 Mayo AC C and C Cellular Road League. The Breaffy 10km run takes place Sunday October 6, this is the third annual fun run and has now become part of the Mayo AC Road League. The event is being organised by Breaffy Community/ Breaffy GAA and Mayo Roscommon Hospice. Pre-register on www.runireland.com is €12 or entry on the day is €15 between 11am and 12.30pm, St John’s National School, Breaffy, Castlebar.
