Man nicked TV from hotel

A man who took a flat screen TV from a hotel in Ballina was before Ballina District Court this week after his case was adjourned for sentencing.

At a previous court sitting it was outlined that on April 27 2012, at 3.20pm, John Garvey, 207 Ridgepool Apartments, Barrett Street, Ballina, entered Ballina Manor Hotel, Barrett Street, where he went to the first floor bar and removed a TV from the wall; placed it in a recycling shopping bag he had with him, and left the hotel. The incident was captured on CCTV. Garvey was arrested on April 30 and the defendant admitted his involvement.

The man, who has previous convictions, was barred from the hotel.

Judge Devins adjourned the case for sentencing to July 23 2013. On July 23 the defendant failed to appear. At court on Tuesday his solicitor Peter Loftus said that Garvey had failed to appear as he was under the care of the Mayo Mental Health services. The court heard that the defendant has come to Garda attention in the intervening period and he attempted to commit two similar thefts, however statements of complaint were not made.

His solicitor said that as his client is undergoing care from the mental health services that a custodial sentence would not benefit him. Judge Devins struck out the charge.
