It’s not how fast you get there, but how much fun you have on the way!

Westport Triathlon Club is hosting the Westport Triathlon on Saturday, June 15. This spectacular route has become one of the most popular triathlon courses for newcomers and experienced triathletes alike. The sport of triathlon is growing rapidly in Ireland and is no longer deemed to be for just the elite or super fit athletes. Race director Anthony Chappat says: “This distance is a perfect introduction to triathlon and Westport is the perfect location for such a race. We think we have found an ideal course and expect our race will grow significantly in future years to come.”

The course route takes in some of the most scenic parts of Westport and its surrounds. It begins with a 750m swim along the sheltered harbour of Westport pier. Then cyclists will follow a very picturesque route along the coast road, past Murrisk, and turning just before Bertra. Much of the return cycle route will be on the cycle path although roads will remain open and local residents and motorists are asked to exercise due caution on the course route on the morning of Saturday June 15.

The race will culminate with a 5km run through the sheltered grounds of Westport House. This race is a perfect introduction for those wanting to dip their toes into a multi-discipline sport, as well as experienced triathletes. The lead sponsors of the race are Hibernia College and the Carlton Atlantic Coast Hotel on the Quays which will are providing the base for the registration, post race food, and the prize-giving ceremony on the day. Entry is open online now at triathlonireland.com
