Drunk driver attempted to drive down one way street

A driver who was stopped by gardaí when they observed him attempt to drive down a one way street was convicted at Castlebar District Court on Wednesday for drink driving, for careless driving, for not having insurance, and for not having an NCT.

Tomas Kalasinkas, 9 Manor Village, Castlebar, was observed by Gardaí on September 16 2012 at 12.30am drive the wrong way up Tucker Street, Castlebar. Gardaí signalled for him to stop and the vehicle reversed back around the corner and came to a stop on New Antrim Street.

Kalasinkas failed a roadside breath test and at the garda station provided a breath sample which showed 73mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

The defendant had no NCT or insurance on the vehicle.

The father of one, who has been in Ireland for over a year, works in Connemara Seafoods and has no previous convictions.

The court heard that he drank that night as he had a big argument that night with his girlfriend and was not thinking when he drove.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €500 for drink driving and disqualified him from driving for three years. For careless driving he was convicted and fined €250. For not having insurance he was convicted and fined €500 and disqualified from driving for two years concurrent. For not having an NCT he was convicted and fined €100.
