Claremorris FRC 

Claremorris Family Resource Centre is in the process of setting up a homework club for national school children in the Claremorris area. The club will be called The Hub and will be a safe, fun, relaxed and educational environment for children from age five to 12 and will run for two afternoons a week from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. 

The Hub will be facilitated by a qualified tutor and is funded by the Irish Youth Foundation through the Children’s Hour initiative. Contact Claremorris FRC for further information on (094 ) 9377838.

Good Friday walk

The five mile Good Friday walk in aid of Kitui orphan and vulnerable children projects in Kenya will start at 11am on March 29, with free registration from 10.15am, at Hinchion’s Stables, Caltra. The beautiful route is Caltra, Crossboyne, Castlemagarret, finishing at the stables for refreshments and certificates.

Bi-lingual music workshops

Four bi-lingual music workshops will take place on March 27 and 28, from 9am to 1pm, in Ballina Arts Centre to celebrate Bliain na Gaeilge, with the help and support of Gnó Mhaigh Eo.  

  

Discover Your Interests

The Hope project (Healthy Options Project Erris ) is offering a six week course in Belmullet to men and women called Discover Your Interests starting on Wednesday March 20.

The course in Áras Inis Gluaire will take place from 10.15am to 12.15pm. It is free of charge and provided by the Hope project. To enquire or book your place tel 087 185 7280 or email [email protected]

Car boot sale in Ballinrobe

A car boot sale will take place on Friday morning March 22 from 10am to 1pm at Youthreach, Neale Road, Ballinrobe. Cars will cost €10 per car space.

Indoor soccer

Claremorris Macra are holding indoor soccer on Thursday March 21 at 8.30pm in Barnacarroll Sports Hall. 

This is open to everyone—members and especially non-members who may be interested in joining Macra. 

Full Monty in aid of cancer charities

This year on St Patrick’s Day, Mayo's own Magnificent Seven are proud to announce a charity gig. In association with The Royal Theatre and Event Centre, Mayo Cancer Support  Association (Rock Rose House ) and The Irish Cancer Society, these proud Castlebar men will be doing the ‘Full Monty’ to raise money. 

Doors will open at 8pm and the show will commence at 9pm. Tickets are €15 and can be bought from Ticketmaster or The Royal Theatre.

Mayo Pink Ribbon Golf Classic

The annual event will take place on April 19 and 20 and will once again be held at Ballina Golf Club. 

There is a gross competition prize which is unique for golf classics and which should appeal to the lower handicap golfer. There is also a society team challenge for those aspiring or retired golfers without a GUI handicap. This is a separate competition within the classic and there will be the main classic team prize and the Mayo Open Championship event. There are also prizes for the top ladies’ team, nearest the pin on all par threes, longest drive for ladies and gents, etc. 

For just €40 per individual or €160 per team of four you will be eligible to win some or most of the above.

Croagh Patrick Heritage Trail

From March 22 to 24, the Croagh Patrick Heritage in association with Croí is holding a walking festival in order to raise funds for Croí. The three days will include guided moderate to hard walks on the trail, daily gentle local loop walks in Clogher, Tourmakeady, and Murrisk; heritage site visits; and local myths and legends from experienced guides. Refreshments and transport is provided each day.

Entry is €15 per day or €40 for the weekend. This year you can register online through the Croí website. All entries will receive a sponsorship pack.

Anger management programme

Knock Counselling Centre, in conjunction with the Irish Association for Anger Management, is running a two-day intensive anger management programme on Saturday April 20 and Sunday April 21.

Temper Your Anger teaches participants how to control their anger and stress levels, using cutting-edge techniques, combined with an experiential approach. Participants will learn strategies to enable them to successfully deal with anger when it arises. As part of a fundraising drive for the jubilee gathering for Aughalasheen National School there will be bingo in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel on Bank Holiday Monday, March 18, at 7.30pm.

Arts project to start in Ballycroy

Mayo County Council Arts Office was recently awarded significant funding from the Arts Council Local Partnership Scheme to mark Ireland's presidency of the Council of the EU. The project, entitled I Could Read The Sky, will see the Arts Office and Mayo Arts Squad work with Dead Good Guides (UK ) and local artists to develop an integrated art project, which will culminate in a public event at Ballycroy National Park on April 13 and 14.

Script-writing course

A four day script-writing course is being run by the Galway Film Centre and may be of great interest to ascribing film scribes in Mayo. he four day course will look at how to develop your story idea. It is aimed at both emerging and experienced screenwriters working on their feature film screenplays.

The class is limited to four writers and two trainee script editors. The course runs from April 18 to 21 and writers interested in this course will need to submit a CV and treatment/story outline to [email protected]

Ballinrobe St Patrick’s Day parade

This year’s St Patrick’s Day parade in Ballinrobe will include a very topical theme. Ballinrobe Scouts are planning their float to focus on The Gathering. Queen of the Lakes Trisha Kay Hughes will also be joining the parade.

There will be a prize and a trophy for the overall best float, plus prizes for the best school, the most amusing, the best current affairs and the best performance. There will also be a prize for the best decorated shop window.

The annual art competition among primary schools of the parish will also take place in the build-up to the festival. The winners will be announced on the day and a selection of entries will be put on display in the Maple Youth Centre.

Entry in the parade takes place on the day. All floats and individual participants are asked to gather at the Crann Mór Training Centre, The Neale Road, Ballinrobe, in good time for the kick-off of the parade at 3.30pm. There will be modern and traditional music in the Cornmarket during the afternoon.

Celebrity Sean Nós

Preparations for the big Celebrity Sean Nós night in the Welcome Inn Hotel, on Friday March 22 at 8pm, are at an advanced stage. The celebrities, 15 in all, are rehearsing under the watchful eye of Emma O’Sullivan.
