Mayo waste company faces trial in Central Criminal Court

The DPP has brought proceedings against a local domestic waste collection business and three associates of the company following an investigation by the Competition Authority, due to an alleged breach of the competition act in relation to waste disposal.

Padraig Hughes, Tully Commons, Castlebar; Patrick McGrath, Chapel Street, Castlebar and Declan McGrath, 3 Castlegrove West, Castlebar, face five charges between them, with one charge also being brought against McGrath Industrial Waste Ltd.

Detective Sgt Joe McLoughlin, from the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation, outlined to Castlebar District Court on Wednesday that the books of evidence were served on the defendants before the court sitting, they will now face charges in the Central Criminal Court for the alleged illegal agreements contrary to competition law.

Hughes, who was represented by solicitor Aidan Crowley, faces three charges while Patrick and Declan McGrath, who were represented by solicitor Richard Kennedy, face one charge each and Declan McGrath will also act as a representative for the company which also faces one charge.
