O’Mahony welcomes €100,000 for Cystic Fibrosis in Mayo

Mayo Fine Gael TD, John O'Mahony, has paid tribute to the commitment and perseverence of the Cystic Fibrosis organisation within Mayo as it edges closer to raising the €1m funding required for the construction of a specialised CF Unit at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar.

The funding announced last week by the Minister for Health, Dr James O'Reilly, of €100,000 towards the project now means that the Mayo CF group is now just €50,000 short of the €1m target.

“The funding announced by Dr James O'Reilly provides a wonderful fillip to the organisation as they strive to provide this vital facility. They are now just €50,000 short of their target and that speaks volumes for everyone involved in the group. The vast bulk of the funding has been raised by the volunteer members of the group who have been campaigning for this facility for so long now,” Dep O’Mahony said.

“I think their perseverance and commitment is an example to the entire community and it shows what can be done when people work together. The CF community in Mayo is not large in numbers by any means but in terms of heart and endeavour it's enormous. When this facility is developed it will provide vital services for CF patients. We have all read about the horror stories in relation to CF facilities in Dublin hospitals but when this project is up and running CF patients and their families will have the best facilities available.

“Everyone involved with the Mayo CF organisation deserves immense credit on what they have achieved to date and I'd like to take this opportunity to wish them well for the remaining €50,000 that they have to raise.”
