Mayo TD and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring has announced funding of €920,000 from Fáilte Ireland to develop Westport Town Hall in what he described as a breakthrough for the project.

Minister Ring said: “This is a breakthrough development for the project to develop a Westport Cultural Centre in the old town hall which has had very strong community support as evidenced by the amount fundraised to date. I also want to acknowledge the pivotal role played by Mayo County Council and Westport Town Council in bringing this project forward.”

The minister said that a cultural centre will be a huge asset for Westport. “Westport Cultural Centre will develop a diverse programme of tourism and arts activities and events aimed at the widest possible audience, with a specific remit to attract additional visitors to the town.”

The minister concluded that he is delighted “not only to see this prominent building in the centre of the town being restored and put to such fantastic use but also to see that the great community effort that has been made is now being rewarded”.
