Indian Festival comes to Castlebar next month

On Friday November 16 and Saturday November 17, for one day and one night the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar celebrates all things Indian as it is transformed into a place of Utsava - the removal of earthly woes - providing you with an opportunity to forget your troubles and enjoy great Indian music, film, dance, poetry, food and much, much more. A feast for the senses.

The festival will be officially opened on Friday November 16 at 7pm by artist and lover of India Anthony O'Brien. The opening will be followed at 7.30pm by a film screening of 3 Idiots, India’s top grossing Indian film ever, starring Aamir Khan. Comedy, drama, romance, song, it has it all.

On Saturday November 17 events begin at 11.30am with the inspirational Tribal Caul Voice and Movement Workshop to awaken the body, heart, and mind through mantra and chant with facilitators Jayne O’Donnell, Mary Doherty, and Lucia Sheehan.

Then at 2pm there will be a fun Bollywood style dance workshop with renowned choreographer Joan Pires.

And at 4pm poet, author and translator Gabriel Rosenstock and classical Indian vocalist Sudipto Das will be celebrating Tagore with an afternoon of poetry, music, and talk celebrating the life and work of Rabindranath Tagore, the first non-European Nobel Laureate.

The music continues at 8pm with a performance of North Indian classical music featuring ethnomusicologist, teacher, and lecturer in Indian music Dara O’Brien (sitar ), with international music performer and teacher Mattu (sarod ) and multi-instrumentalistist Sadanand Magee (tabla ).
