Castlebar

The competition played over last weekend was an 18 hole stroke and was sponsored by Bosh Bar, Linenhall Street, Castlebar. The weather over the weekend was quite decent for golf, with a fresh breeze on both days making the course play quite difficult. The winner of the gents competition was Stephen Brady with a superb 65 nett. Michael O'Brien was second with a great 67 nett. The gross prize was won by Eamon Byrne who shot 76 gross while Michael Thornton won third with 68 nett. The junior prize was won by Shane O'Connor with 75 nett.

The ladies’ competition was won by Christina Gordon with 37pts from Bernie Burke, also on 37pts in second place. Nicola Sheridan was third with 34pts and Mary Fox was fourth with 33pts.

Mulranny

The Tommy Corrigan Cup makes a welcome reappearance on the Mulranny Golfing Calendar after a lapse of six years. Last played for in 2006 when it was won by Ger Staunton, the cup was purchased in the sixties by the late Tommy Corrigan. Tommy was a publican in Mulranny and later in Dublin and, while not a golfer, he decided to sponsor an annual competition at Mulranny Golf Club. The cup was played for annually for a number of years before disappearing into someone’s attic. It resurfaced in 1998 (won by Aiden Brett ) when Tommy’s son, Brian, decided to sponsor an annual competition. It is appropriate that on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tommy Corrigan that his cup will be played for this coming weekend. Mulranny Golf Club would like to express their appreciation to Brian Corrigan (also a publican in Rathmines, Dublin ) for his generous sponsorship and assures him that it will not disappear into an attic on this occasion. The Mulranny Park Hotel Winter league will commence in two weeks. Teams of four cost €80 and is open to ladies and gents. Last year’s inaugural league proved very popular and it is expected that there will be an increase in the number of competing teams.

Westport

All roads led to Wexford last Wednesday and it wasn’t for the ploughing championships. With five districts qualifying for the finals of the ILGU Junior Cup, Westport were paired off against Dublin City in the final match.

However despite a valiant battle, Dublin City proved just to strong at the end for Westport.

Nuala Walsh, lady captain, would like to thank all the ladies associated with the junior team during the year including the caddies who made themselves available in Wexford, the Castlebar Junior Cup team who facilitated Westport with a vital challenge match prior to the final and to all the members who supported the team, those who sent cards and texts with their best wishes to Wexford and especially, those who made the long mid-week trip to Courtown.

The annual Night of Champions presentation will take place at Westport Golf Club on this Sunday, October 7 at 8pm. The traditional end of season evening is the highlight of the social calendar for all members with all club matchplay prizes as well as all the remaining Golfer of the Year presentations made to the successful competitors.

A presentation to PGA Professional Alex Mealia will take place at Westport Golf Club this evening Friday, October 5 at 9.30pm. Following 21 years service as the head professional in Carrowholly, Alex stepped down earlier this year. An integral part of the club, Alex was to the forefront of many new initiatives that were developed in Westport Golf Club both on and off the course. He represented Westport in a number of pro-am events over the years which kept the Westport Club profile to the fore and he was certainly a driving force in the development of the junior golf programme in the late ‘90s.
