Suicide Prevention Code of Practice to be launched

Worldwide more than one million people die by suicide each year. This week, Suicide Prevention Week provides an opportunity to promote worldwide action to prevent suicides and to build resilience in communities. Communities across the globe will be lighting a candle to show their support for suicide prevention, to remember a lost loved one, and for the survivors of suicide.

Thirteen family resource centres from Mayo and Galway join the global community in observing World Suicide Prevention week by launching their Suicide Prevention Code of Practice today (Friday ) in Tacú FRC Ballinrobe, by Bill O’Dea, CEO of the Family Support Agency. There will also be a keynote address by John Fitzmaurice of Jigsaw in Galway.

This code of practice outlines clear guidelines and best practice for FRCs on how to address suicide prevention in their work. It was developed in conjunction with the HSE (Galway, Mayo and Roscommon ) resource officer for suicide prevention.

FRCs joins with global communities in their commitment to the prevention of suicide. They believe there is a collective responsibility in suicide prevention work that involves supporting people and communities as well as working with other agencies.

The Western Regional Forum aims to network, support, and represent the voice of the 13 FRCs in the Western Region in order to affect change at regional and national policy levels. It does this work in collaboration with the national forum which consists of 106 FRCs.
