Munnelly archive and talk at the Linenhall

Opening in the Linenhall Arts Centre’s Foyer Gallery is Captured by Song, a fascinating selection of some 60 images held at the National Folklore Collection representing more than 30 years of life and work of song, music and folklore collector Tom Munnelly. The exhibition officially opens on Monday, September 10, at 7.30pm, and includes a talk ‘Tom Munnelly - Captured by Song’ by Ronan Galvin, exhibition curator and lecturer in Irish folklore. Admission is free, all welcome.

Tom Munnelly was employed by the Department of Irish Folklore at University College Dublin as a full-time song, music and folklore collector from 1971 until his death in 2007. In the course of his 36 year career, Tom’s recordings on reel-to-reel, digital, and cassette audio tapes of folk song, music, and lore make him one of the most important and fruitful collectors Ireland has seen. Ronan Galvin has been working on digitising the Tom Munnelly collection for the Department of Irish Folklore at UCD, and the talk, with audio recordings, will include selections from Tom Munnelly’s work in Mayo.
