New environmental and electrical engineering options at IT Sligo

IT Sligo has launched new courses in Environmental Engineering and Electrical Installation and Maintenance that includes a new three year Ordinary Bachelor of Engineering degree programme in Environmental Engineering.

Trevor McSharry, head of the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction at IT Sligo, stated that graduates of the new programme will be qualified for a range of jobs with local authorities, Government agencies, engineering contractors, environmental consultants, environmental contractors and environmental operators both in Ireland and abroad.

“The most recent Forfás guide on current and future skills needs in Ireland, as well as recent comments made by the president of Engineers Ireland has confirmed that there is a shortfall of Environmental Engineering graduates,” said Mr McSharry, adding: “On finishing, graduates will have a range of options for further studies at IT Sligo in the areas of environmental science, construction project management and civil engineering.”

A new Higher Certificate in Electrical Maintenance and Installation has also been developed at the Institute. The two-year level six course will equip graduates for jobs in such diverse areas as factory maintenance, renewable energy installation, field service technicians or burglar/fire alarm installation.

The course will provide students with hands on experience of working with electricity, providing an in-depth working knowledge of electrical installations. Participants will learn how to install, test, commission and troubleshoot electrical circuits and equipment, with the emphasis on developing practical skills and problem-solving techniques.
