St Louis Community School launches 2012 further education (PLC) courses

St Louis Community School in Kiltimagh is offering 12 further education (PLC ) programmes in five subject areas for the 2012 academic year.

There are programmes in business/IT, nursing and health, hairdressing, sport and childcare. Each programme typically includes a minimum of eight individual courses, leading to certification by FETAC/City & Guilds at either Level 5 or Level 6.

Microsoft Office Specialist, up to and including expert level, giving the opportunity for students to achieve the masters certificate from Microsoft and ECDL certification are also available.

A completely new programme for 2012 is Level 6 professional hairdressing, which offers the opportunity to achieve the City & Guilds Level 2 diploma in women’s hairdressing.

New courses within the Level 5 business programme include entrepreneurial skills and accounting. New within Level 5 nursing and health is health-related fitness. Rugby and basketball are new coaching courses in Level 5 sport and recreation studies. In Level 5 childcare, new courses include creative arts for early childhood and Irish for pre-school services. Special needs assisting and child psychology are new additions to the Level 6 childcare programme.

As well as offering direct opportunities for employment, a FETAC award provides an alternative route of access to higher education.

The school also offers careers guidance, well-equipped IT facilities, and help with study skills, word processing, numeracy, and literacy. All classes are timetabled between 9am and 3.45pm, with most timetabled between 10am and 2.30pm.
