Callino Quartet will be coming to Westport

The Callino Quartet will be joined by UK clarinettist Sarah Beaty in Westport on Thursday, March 22 in the Holy Trinity Church for a concert starting at 8pm.

The quartet will open the programme with Franz Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in D Major Op.64 No.5 - ‘The Lark’. Haydn is considered the father of the string quartet and the Callinos did a three year project with an Arts Council award studying and performing Haydn’s works. Following this most beautiful and elegant string quartet, they will then be joined by Sarah Beaty for a recent piece by David Bruce called ‘Gumboots’. Gumboot dancing developed into a form of dance based on South Africa’s black miners who wore wellingtons while they worked in flooded gold mines. Slapping their boots and chains was used by the workers as a form of communication which was otherwise banned in the mine, and this later developed into a form of dance. Starting out as tranquil music, it develops into five, ever-more-lively 'gumboot dances', often joyful and always vital.

After the interval the quintet will play ‘The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind’ by Argentinean composer Olsvaldo Golijov, for string quartet and klezmer clarinets. This work was premiered and recorded by the world renowned Kronos Quartet. In 2010 the Callinos were selected as one of three quartets worldwide to participate in a week of workshops with the Kronos Quartet in Carnegie Hall New York, where the Kronos are resident quartet, culminating in a Carnegie Hall performance.
