Spring leagues sees good scoring around the county

Ballina

In the ladies’ competition last week, the Thursday nine hole stableford competition was won by Ann White with a score of 13pts. Ann went on to show Thursday’s performance was no flash in the pan and also won the Sunday nine hole stableford competition on a score of 16pts.

Ballyhaunis

In the Philip’s Bar sponsored Stableford competition last weekend in the east Mayo course, Tommy Moran was the winner with the score of 41pts. His play on the back nine was enough for him to hold off Tony Grenan in second place, with Tommy Prenty coming home in third place. The ladies’ competition was won by Marietta Potgieter on a score of 36pts, with Angela Grogan coming home in second place one point behind. The junior section was claimed by Andrew Hickey.

Castlebar

The fourth round of the 2012 Ladies Spring League, sponsored by Cox’s Bars & Restaurants, was played from Monday, January 23 through Sunday, January 29. The best placed team after round four is that of Mary Rose McNulty on the total of 276, their round four score of 74 points leap-frogging them into the top spot. In second place is the team of Evelyn Brady with 275 points while Lorna Irwin's are third with 273 points. Carmel Connaughton’s team are fourth with 265. The teams of Carmel Moran, Deirdre Moylett and Marie Rowley are all tied with scores of 264 each. The best performing team of round four was that of Mary Rose McNulty who amassed a great total of 74 points. They were followed by the team of Regina Kerr with 70 points and the Evelyn Brady’s team with 69 points.

Best individual scores of round four were the 31 points each of Sheila Baynes and Veina Brett with Cora Mulroy and Lorna Irwin both tied on 29 points.

With four rounds down and four rounds left, it’s the best six team scores from the eight rounds that count toward the final on March 11 and round five can be played through to this Sunday, February 5.

Claremorris

Last weekend’s three-ball rumble, which was sponsored by CBE Claremorris, was won by the trio of Padraig Mannion, Seamus Mannion, and Tomás Mannion with a score of 81pts.

Westport

At the annual Golfers Guide to Ireland Awards evening in Dublin last week Paul O’Neill picked up the best Parkland Course in Connacht. The acknowledgement was the second such award presented to Westport following a similar result in the recently published Backspin Golf Magazine.

To coincide with the award, Westport has a magnificent golfing offer for the month of February only. Visitors will be able to follow in the footsteps of US Open Champion Rory McIlroy and play the championship course for €20 on any day in February and if they play twice, they will be offered a complimentary round for themselves, which must be played before March .

In the club competitions last weekend, Maeve O’Farrell was the winner of the ladies competition with a score of 17pts, she was followed home in second place by Bernie Bergin who finished up with a score of 13pts. In the gents’ nine-hole competition Jerry Moran was the winner on 38pts, Mick Higgins came home in second place on 35pts.
