Dooega Drama group bring John B Keane classic to the Royal Theatre

Steeped in classic John B Keane humour, Many Young Men of Twenty is considered by many to be one of Keane’s finest, and while it deals with the dark topics of poverty, love, and emigration in Ireland in the sixties, all of which have a particular resonance in today’s climate, the play is also raucously funny.

Set in 1960s rural Ireland, it is a hilarious and sometimes heart-wrenching look at emigration and hardship through the eyes of Danger Mulally. It is a musical play dealing with the lack of jobs at home that forced people to leave their native Ireland for England and for a better life. It describes the emigrants longing for home, their annual homecomings, the jobs they disliked so much, and their filthy dwellings situations.

Dooega Drama Group’s production of Many Young Men of Twenty, makes this the third production of a John B Keane play to be staged at the Royal Theatre within 12 months. Both The Field and Big Maggie were huge successes with fans of Irish drama so the Royal Theatre is delighted that Dooega Drama Group are to bring yet another of John B Keane’s classic plays to Castlebar.

This is not an out and out musical as such but a play that really does have a bit of everything, live music, plenty of laughter, and just the right degree of seriousness to balance the evening's entertainment.

The performance will take place on Friday February 10 and tickets are €15 with the show starting at 8pm. Tickets are on sale now, and are available from the Royal Theatre Box office on 0818 300 000 or 094 9023111, from Ticketmaster online, and outlets nationwide.
