Mayo garda stations to close in cost saving measure

Tourmakeady, Glenisland, Mulranny, and Bellacorrik Garda stations in Mayo are to be closed under the new public expenditure cost-saving measures announced in the budget this week.

Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan said that following an examination of the Garda stations network all “Divisional officers were asked to assess the levels of activity in each Garda station in their area. Arising from that 31 Garda stations across the country will close and a further eight stations which are currently non-operational will be formally closed. Ten stations will have their opening hours reduced. We have decided that resources could be better deployed and more effectively used on the frontline if those particular stations no longer had to be staffed and maintained.”

Reacting to the closure, local councillor Michael McNamara said that: “Rural communities will be left more vulnerable to crime as the State fails to fulfil the most basic obligation to protect its citizens. I appeal to all our government TD's in Mayo to ask that this serious matter be immediately reversed.”
