Remand for Garda station arson accused

A 25-year-old man charged in relation to an arson attack on a garda station last weekend was refused bail and remanded into further custody to appear again at Harristown District Court today (Friday ).

Mark Maughan, with an address 14 Northbrook Avenue, Castlebar was brought before Galway District Court on Monday charged with allegedly committing arson, in that he, without lawful excuse, damaged by fire the public foyer area of Castlebar Garda Station on November 20, 2011, contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Damage Act 1991.

Shortly after 4am last Sunday a man entered the public office of Castlebar Garda Station and threw a flaming object towards the public counter. Two members of An Garda Síochána who were on duty in the station escaped uninjured. The man was arrested a short distance away and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Westport Garda Station.

At Monday’s court sitting Inspector Sean Glynn made an application for a remand in custody. The court heard that gardai had “serious concerns” about Maughan being granted bail due to the serious nature of the offence and that there is likely to be further charges.

Judge Mary Fahy refused bail, adding that it was now a matter for the High Court. She then remanded Maughan in custody to be brought before Harristown District Court today, November 25. Judge Fahy also ordered that any medical assistance deemed necessary be accorded to Maughan.
