New FÁS apprenticeship in farriery

FÁS recently launched a new training course in Farriery under the Standards Based Apprenticeship Scheme.

The occupation of farrier involves making and fitting horseshoes to prepared feet, understanding different types of shoeing and trimming and both hot and cold shoeing techniques. The care and management of horses, an in-depth knowledge of horsemanship, equine anatomy, physiology, conformation and movement and foot balance are essential parts of this new apprenticeship. Welding operations to assist in the production and modification of tools and forging tools are also vital skills.

Mr Shane Connolly of Clough, Cummer, Tuam is the first apprentice to be registered in the west region in this craft of farriery by his employer Mr Gerry Dillon, Cutteenty, Annaghdown, Co Galway.
