Greenway funding welcomed

Mayo County Council has welcomed the announcement by Minister of State, Deputy Michael Ring, of an investment of €1.8m in tourism infrastructure in the county. The Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Councillor Austin Francis O'Malley, said: “This investment is most welcome and will link the Great Western Greenway with Castlebar and will spread the benefits of this most successful project.”

The County Manager, Peter Hynes, said that Mayo County Council looks forward to delivering on these two further key projects which will help to enhance the tourism product in the county. "It is further evidence of the success of the County Council's stragegy of developing Mayo as the premier walking, cycling and outdoor pursuits destination in the country,”he said. He thanked the department and Fáilte Ireland and the many agencies and landowners whose co-operation made these very exciting projects possible.

Sinn Féin Councillor, and chairperson of Smart Travel Castlebar, Thérèse Ruane has welcomed the commitment of funding to link Castlebar to the Great Western Greenway: “It's more than a year now since my proposal to develop a walking/cycling route linking Castlebar to Islandeady and then to the Greenway. I am absolutely delighted that this will now become a reality and that Castlebar can now benefit from this tourism potential; this will also provide a badly needed route for cyclists to commute into Castlebar along the Westport/Castlebar route.”
