Westport business wins national Hygiene and Food Safety award

A local Westport business has landed at the top of ‘The Q’ having just been named as the Group Retailer of The Year in Ireland for Hygiene and Food Safety.

The National Q Mark Awards, known as the “Oscars” of business excellence, saw the Kavanagh Group from Westport, go head to head with more than 100 of the best companies in Ireland, before being named as the winner of The National Q Mark for Hygiene and Food Safety, the ultimate achievement in quality and excellence for a supermarket group.

The Kavanagh Group employs 650 people and consists of 15 supermarkets, nine SuperValu stores in the Republic of Ireland, two SuperValu stores in Northern Ireland, and four Budgens stores in the UK. As a group it has a strong record for quality and excellence, having previously won the Group Retailer of The Year Title at the National Q Mark Awards in 2009.

The managing director of The National Q Mark, Irene Collins, said: “The teams in the Kavanagh group deserve this fantastic acknowledgement of their commitment to continuous improvement for their high operating standards. This award is very well deserved.”

Phil Hogan TD, Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government congratulated The Kavanagh Group and said that their “focus on quality and excellence and their commitment to their customers was a real winning combination.”
