Four men to appear in court today in relation to slash-hook incident

Four men, who are all related to each other, are to appear before Harristown District Court today (Friday ) in relation to a serious incident which occurred at a funeral in Claremorris on Monday.

Appearing before Ballina District Court on Tuesday were: Thomas McDonagh, 123 Manor Village, Castlebar; Bernard McDonagh, 5 Knockthomas Drive, Castlebar; Gerard McDonagh, Saleen, Castlebar; and Eoin McDonagh, 64 McHale Road, Castlebar.

Thomas McDonagh and Bernard McDonagh, who represented themselves, were remanded in custody, by consent, by Judge Mary Devins.

Gerard McDonagh, who represented himself, made an application for bail. Inspector Joe Doherty objected to bail due to the seriousness of the charge, the likelihood of more serious charges and the potential that the defendant might interfere with potential witnesses.

The inspector said that this was a “very serious incident” where a Martin McDonagh from Donegal received injuries to the head from a slash-hook. Insp Doherty said that the feud might escalate, therefore he appealed for a remand in custody. Judge Devins remanded McDonagh in custody.

An application for bail was also made on behalf on Eoin McDonagh, by his solicitor. Again Insp Doherty objected to bail. The judge said that the situation is “too volatile” and remanded the defendant in custody.

Inspector Joe Doherty said that a file was being prepared for the DPP and that there is a possibility of further, more serious charges, against all four men.
