Councillor says habitual offenders are ‘milking the system’ with free legal aid

“Habitual offenders” who are before the courts and are looking for free legal aid are costing millions to the country each year, which could buy a lot of CCTV cameras and recruit a lot of gardaí, Cathaoirleach of Westport Town Council, Councillor Christy Hyland, said.

The councillor made his comments during the town’s joint policing committee meeting, which was held during the week.

Cllr Hyland said such people are “milking the system... it’s a profession for them,” and he said that instead it “should be one strike and out”.
