Gents’ Golfer of the Year up for decision at Westport Golf Club

Balla

Last weekend’s competition sponsored by Shaws, Castlebar, was won by PJ Brett with a score of 53 nett. His scoring on the back nine kept him ahead of Declan Nally who also scored 53 nett. Paraic Cuffe took the gross prize and Mick Mellet came third with a score of 55 nett. The ladies’ competition was won by Breege Jennings, with Delia O’Hara second, and Brenda Cleary finishing in third place.

In the Golfer of the Year competition, Declan Nally has a 14-point lead with one competition left to play. There is an outing planned for Saturday, October 1 at Castle Dargan, Ballisodare, Co Sligo. There is a sign-up sheet on the noticeboard for the outing.

Ballina

Phonsie McLoughlin was the winner of the 18 hole single stableford sponsored by Dillon and McCarron last weekend. He finished with a score of 44pts. John Bourke came second with a score of 41pts and Martin McElligiot came third.

A large contingent of club members and supporters travelled to Castlerock, Co Derry to support the Club's Junior Cup Team in the All Ireland semi-final of the prestigious competition.

Ballina had won the Cup outright in 2008 and had come through to win the Connacht pennant in August but on this occasion they were to be disappointed, losing out to a strong Mitchelstown team who went on to defeat Lurgan in the final. Jonathan Doherty won three and two and veteran stalwart Noel Dee was on the way to a comfortable win in the final match, but luck deserted Jonathan Kelly, Kenneth Lawrence and Liam Casey in the other matches, which were all lost narrowly.

Castlebar

Charlie Muldoon won the Tommy Moylette Memorial Cup in Castlebar last weekend with a score of 41pts. He finished just ahead of John Mitchel in second spot with Kieran Horkan taking the gross prize. Diarmuid Gibbons was the best junior and John Kelly took the beginners prize.

Ballyhaunis

Last weekend’s competition sponsored by FBD Insurance was won by William Mawell with a score of 19; Michael Webb Jr came second with Tom Prenty the third place finisher. The ladies’ competition was won by Fiona Prenty with MF Cleary taking second place.

Westport

Maura Jennings had an exciting end to her Golfer of the Year (GOY ) competition on Sunday last. Using the FedEx Cup format the leading five qualifiers were all in with a chance of securing the title of Champion Lady Golfer for 2011. When the final result was tallied, the top five golfers remained the same, though their order had changed significantly.

Mary McNicholas had moved to first place from third and so claimed the 2011 title. Maureen Keane, last year’s joint winner and who has had a podium finish in each of the last three seasons, was runner up, with Marion Duffy in third place. Alex Mathastein was the only junior to feature on the final day, finishing in ninth place overall, and Lady Captain Maura Jennings was delighted to finish in the top 10.

Next Sunday will see the final GOY competition in the men’s club. The top 30 golfers will come under starters’ orders from 8.04am and will play for the Sherry Fitzgerald Crowley title in groups of three at eight-minute intervals. The official time-sheet will be posted on Wednesday morning and members are requested to strictly adhere to it, as a courtesy to our sponsor.

Eugene Lavelle has come from nowhere with two outright competition victories in the last six weeks, but a top three finish is all he can hope for in Carrowholly on Sunday.

The main event, the overall title, is a three-horse race between long time leader Michael Groden, leading qualifier Tony Bree and Club President Niall Halpin. These members will go out in the final group at 9.30am. The senior gents’ award is a wide open affair with in excess of seven golfers still in with a chance of taking the title in its inaugural season.
