Captain’s Prize day in Ballina this weekend

Balla

Colm Walsh with a score of 38pts won the stableford competition in Balla last weekend, he was followed home in second place by PJ Brett who scored 36pts with Derek Dempsey third one point further back. In the ladies competition Breege Jennings and Elaine O’Hora finished on 36pts each, with Jennings’ back nine three play securing the win. Marie Flanagan took third place.

Ballinrobe

Hynes Shoes Castlebar and Galway were the sponsors of the competition in Ballinrobe last time out. Aled Roberts with a score of 39pts was the winner. Vincent O’Connell came home in second place two points behind with Sean Mulryan taking third and Michael C Burke the gross prize winner. In the ladies section Ann Galvin’s score of 37pts was enough for her to take the win. Eileen Comer finished in second place two points behind with Rose Dooley coming third.

Ballinrobe Golf Club are hosting a AM AM competition on July 30 to raise funds for John Mullin from Kilmaine who is going to Ghana as part of an ESB team to build a school. Teams cost €80 and sponsorship of a tee box for the day is €50. A time sheet is in operation and for more information contact 087 7996010.

Ballina

The Loft Bar and B and B sponsored the stableford competition in Ballina last weekend. Liam Casey was the winner with a score of 39pts. His back nine scoring saw him take the win ahead of Gerard O’Reilly in second place who also finished on 39pts. Pat Joyce was one point further behind in third.

A fun Scramble and BBQ will take place today Friday July 22 throughout the day. Teams of three can be any combination e.g. ladies, gents or mixed and the entry fee is €10 including food.

The draw for the Captains Prize is now on the main notice board and you are requested to check your tee times and be at the first tee in good time on Sunday morning. Captain, Gerry Tuffy is wished well on the day and hopefully the weather will be kind to us. Food will be served in the bar throughout the day and breakfast will be available to pre-order from 7am.

Last Friday’s ladies competition was sponsored by Kevin Halloran Consulting and first prize went to Helena Syron who shot 38pts, second to Soibhan Leonard with 36 pts and third to Frances Burke with 35pts.

Castlebar

Barry Heffernan won the Eddie Egan sponsored competition with a score of 43pts, he finished well in front of the rest of the field with Peter Horkan taking second place on 37pts the same score as Billy Evans in third with Brian Ainsworth the gross winner on 28pts. The ladies competition was won by Claire Granahan who scored 36pts, she just held off the challenge of Rowena Kilkelly in second and Frances O’Dowd in third with Kathleen Sweeney taking fourth place.

Claremorris

Glynn’s Hardware were the sponsors of the competition last weekend in Claremorris and Alan Ferrick was the man going home with the bragging rights after he won the gents competition with a score of 39pts. The Cat 1 section was taken by David Higgins with 35pts, John Walsh was the Cat 2 winner on 37pts and Keith McCormack took the Cat 3 on 39pts. The ladies competition was claimed by Mary Walsh with a score of 34pts.

Mulranny

Due to the inclement weather conditions, last Sunday's competition had to be cancelled. This Sunday is Captain's Day (Patsy Noone ), a six hole play off for the top 15 qualifiers should create a thrilling climax to the competition. A nine hole event for ladies and visitors will also be included.

Junior lessons, conducted by Todd O'Reilly, continue on Fridays and are well attended. John McHugh, Thomas Gallagher and Tom Mulloy have qualified for the semi-finals of the Autumn Cup match play. The fourth spot will be filled by Fergus Rothwell or Liam Walsh

Swinford

John Rooney was the winner of the Captain’s Prize (Pat Marren ) last weekend. Rooney hit a score of 103.5 nett to just see off the challenge of Vincent Murtagh in second place who scored 104. PJ Hennigan took third place with Joseph Gallagher coming home in fourth with Gerry Ronayne the gross prize winner.

Westport

Teddy McDonnell’s score of 77nett was enough to give him the win in the Hastings Insurance competition last weekend, John Gibbons came home in second place also on 77nett as did John Gavin in third place. Liam Halpin was the gross prize winner with Pat McIntyre taking fourth place.

Next Saturday, Maura Jennings has her Captain’s Prize. With double points on offer, the ladies Golfer of the Year table is bound to have a different look on Saturday night. The time-sheet is now open and there will be scheduled competitions for all members.
