Castlebar native Alan Shaw is due to be elected Mayor of Athlone at the council’s July meeting to be held next Monday.
The Fine Gael town councillor will become the town’s first citizen for the 2011-2012 term after spending the previous term as deputy mayor. Speaking ahead of the elections, Cllr Shaw said that it would be an honour to become mayor. “As someone born and reared in Castlebar it’s a great achievement. I’ve been living in Athlone almost 20 years and never dreamt that I’d become mayor of the town in which I arrived as a student in AIT in 1991.”
