Power play golf comes to Westport

Balla

Pat Kilgallon was the winner of the gents’ competition sponsored by Mulroys, Castlebar last weekend in Balla. Pat hit a score of 39pts (back nine ) to hold out for the win. John O’Connor came second also finishing on 36pts with Richie Murphy third one point back.

The ladies’ competition was claimed by Kathleen Minogue who scored 37pts over the 18 holes. Elaine O’Hora’s good scoring on the back nine saw her hold off Nora Heraty to take second place after both women finished on 36pts each. This weekend’s Stableford competition is sponsored by Eddie Egan Jewellers, Castlebar.

Ballina

Last Sunday was the Vice President’s Prize (Sean Henry ), the 18 hole single stroke competition was won by David Finnerty with a score of 64 nett. He finished three a head of Mickey Tighe in second place. Cian Gilmartin came third on 67 nett, with Jonathan Duffy the gross prize winner with 77 gross. Darren Flaherty, Clive Gilmartin and Rory Tighe were the winners in the category one through to three respectively. A presentation of all outstanding prizes will take place in the clubhouse on Sunday June 5 at 9.30 p.m. All prize winners are asked to attend to collect their prizes.

Ballinrobe

The Monthly Medal competition in Ballinrobe Golf Club saw Declan Flaherty win the gold medal competition with 68 nett. The silver medal was won by Gary Faherty with Gerry Sheridan the bronze medal winner. The gross competition was won by Kevin Ferrick, the front nine section by Donal Dowd and the back nine section by Noel Corbett.

In the ladies’ competition Siobhan Hunt was the winner with a score of 70 nett, Eileen Byrne was two behind in second place, with Terry Mullan third. The gross prize was won by Doris Jones, Concepta D’Arcey was the best scorer on the front nine, with Aine Melville taking the back nine win. On Sunday and Monday coming the club are hosting the Costello and McDermott 36 hole open competition

Ballyhaunis

Last weekend’s competition was sponsored by Grogans Concrete. The winner of the gents’ section was John Doyle with a score of 65. He finished two in front of Seamus London who scored 67, with Shane Freemen taking third. In the ladies’ competition Kung Fanning was the winner with a score of 70, her strong showing on the back nine set her up for the win over Kathleen Fanning, who also finished with a score of 70. The junior section was won by Evan Henry who scored 65 over the 18 holes.

Castlebar

In the Mick O’Malley four ball better ball last weekend, the duo of Tom Moylett and Johan Collins were the winning pair with a score of 42pts. Richie Kenny and Paddy Grogan came second, with Shane O’Connor and Barry Redmond third.

Mulranny

The Leo Doherty Menswear, Castlebar-sponsored stableford competition was won by Rodney Wood, with a fantastic score of 41pts. He pipped John Feeney who recorded 40pts with John McHugh in third place on 39pts.

Next weekend's stableford competition is sponsored by Hurst Heating and Plumbing, Castlebar. The annual Burrishoole GAA Am-Am fundraiser will be held on Friday and Saturday next. Teams of four cost €100 and valuable prizes are on offer.

Swinford

Simon Roynane was the winner of the 18 hole stableford competition last week with a score of 42pts. He finished two points ahead of Dean Gillespie in second place, with Matt Duggan coming home in third spot.

Westport

Despite high winds and persistent rain throughout the day on Friday last, the annual Joe O’Donnell Club Am-Am was a huge success. The highlight of the day was, of course, the introduction of Power Play Golf on the ninth and 18th holes. There were two pin positions on both greens for the event.
