Short film shot in Castlebar to be screened on RTE

Local writer/director Orlagh Heverin, a native of Castlebar, won an RTE/Galway Film Centre Short Script Award in 2008 for the short film that she wrote, Losing Memories. In March 2009, Orlagh directed the short film which was shot in Castlebar, Ballintubber and Louisburgh. Since then the film has done the festival circuit, playing in film festivals in Galway, Cork, Waterford, Belfast, Clones, Wales, and South Africa and has picked up a number of awards. The short film is about an elderly lady who is losing her memory, this mood piece shows her life through her eyes, her past and present merging into each other. She slips into being the young girl she once was and people and memories from her past surround her. The short film is under 10 minutes in duration and it will be screened on RTE 2 on Monday, May 23 at 11.55 pm as part of the RTE Short series.

Antonio Julio Lopez Castro at the Custom House

Custom House Studios at Westport Quay are please to present an exhibition of new paintings, From a Landscape, by Antonio Julio Lopez Castro. The exhibition was formally opened by artist Breda Burns on Thursday May 5, and continues every day until May 29 2011.

The paintings in this exhibition have been created during the past 12 months between Offaly and Kerry. They are a reflection on the landscape in which we live, the place we inhabit, a place of human connection and encounter.

Ghosts comes to the stage in the Linenhall

Jane O’Sullivan exhibition in Westport

Custom House Studios at Westport Quay present an exhibition of new paintings, Would Not Violets Grow From Her Heart, by Jane O’ Sullivan. The official opening was carried out by poet and filmmaker Alice Lyons and the exhibition is continuing until June 6.

Viewing Jane O’Sullivan’s work is like stepping inside a world. It is a beautiful, fragile and melancholic world with strange and beautiful things. Her practice encompasses a variety of media – drawing, painting, photography, installation, video – and her skill lies in using these different mediums to create a sense or feel for the subjects.

The Bonfire Band live in Castlebar

The Bonfire Band brings its distinctive and engaging blues/country/folk sound to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Tuesday May 17 at 8pm. The Bonfire Band’s easy-going style offers an impressive selection of harmony-driven self-penned songs full of musical and lyrical maturity, as witnessed on two albums, One Man Can’t Carry Half a Piano and Recordings from The Plough. The band boasts an accomplished line-up of musical talent: Ben Faulkner (guitar ), Will Heath (bass ), Adam Beattie (banjo/lead guitar ), Dominic Brider (drums ), and Will Butterworth (piano ).

Love and Death in the Middle Ages; a medieval fundraiser for Japan

Early music duo Misericordia and traditional storyteller Clive Fairweather will play a fund-raising concert for victims of the Japanese tsunami on Thursday May 19 in the Customs House on Westport Quay at 8pm. Tickets are available in advance from the Custom House priced at €15, or on the door.
