Buy a Block for Mayo Abbey National School

Friday night, April 1, saw the launch of the ‘Buy a Block’ initiative in aid of Mayo Abbey NS. The launch was held at an Irish night in Malachy Byrne’s. The wonderful Sister Act provided the music and the night was well supported by parents and people from the local community.

Work has started on a new three-teacher school in Mayo Abbey and the Buy a Block campaign is being run to help with fundraising. The first block for the new building was raffled at the Irish night and was won by Denise Duggan.

Sponsorship cards are available in the community and in local businesses. Each card has 20 lines and each line corresponds to a “block”. Lines/blocks can be bought for €20 each. An online facility is also being set up so that people who are away or abroad have the opportunity to purchase blocks. This can be done through Facebook and the school website (www.mayoabbeyns.com ).

The names of all those who purchase blocks will be entered into a draw to be held on Saturday July 30. The prize fund consists of a first prize of €1,000 and five prizes of €100 each. This draw coincides with a big reunion weekend currently being organised for all past pupils of Mayo Abbey NS. It is hoped to hold this reunion on the August Bank Holiday weekend (Friday 29 and Saturday 30 July ) of this year. There will be a host of events for young and old as well as music in Malachy Byrne’s on that weekend.
