Power Detective in final of national award

Castlebar company, Powersavvy, which was set up less than two years ago, was recently nominated for a major industry accolade that recognises innovation and business potential.

Powersavvy, set up by owner Colm Rochford in direct response to the recession, has seen business flourish as consumers look at ways to cut their electricity bills. Powersavvy reached the final shortlist for the Sustainable Energy Innovation Award 2011, which was judged during the Energy Show at the RDS in Dublin.

The company’s success is built on Mr Rochford’s invention, the Power Detective, which monitors home electricity usage to identify those appliances consuming the most power – allowing householders and companies to take action and reduce consumption and cost. On average, those using the Power Detective and Mr Rochford’s technical advice, can achieve savings of up to 30 per cent.

Powersavvy’s innovation and success caught the eye of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI ), which included the Power Detective in its shortlist of businesses providing measurable environmental solutions. Mr Rochford welcomed Powersavvy’s nomination as recognition of the firm’s real environmental impact and impressive growth over the past two years.

“Even to reach the shortlist is a huge accolade in itself, joining only a few such companies in the whole country,” he said. “I’m very much looking forward to meeting with the SEAI and outlining how the Power Detective demonstrates our company’s technical innovation and real environmental contribution.

“We’ve seen tremendous growth in a very short period of time as consumers recognise that environmental measures also make sound economic sense,” he added.
